New Haven-Style Apizza Made with Heart

Some restaurants serve great food. Others make you feel welcome the moment you walk through the door. Mangia Mi does both.

Our latest Slice Mob meetup brought us to Sandy Hook, where Chef Rebecca White personally welcomed our group. That simple gesture set the tone for the afternoon. You could tell right away this wasn’t just another restaurant. It’s a place built on family, pride, and genuine hospitality.

The restaurant has a bright, open feel with plenty of space and an open kitchen that lets you watch everything being made. Family photos on the walls remind you this is a family business, and that comes through in every part of the experience.

The Pizza

Mangia Mi is serving excellent New Haven-style apizza, and they’re doing it their own way while staying true to the style.

The Tomato Pie was outstanding. The San Marzano tomatoes were bright and flavorful, the crust had a beautiful bake with just the right crunch, and the grated cheese added another layer without taking away from the tomatoes.

The Cheese Pizza reminded me why I always order a plain pie. There’s nowhere to hide. When the dough, sauce, and cheese are this well balanced, you don’t need a long list of toppings.

My favorite of the day was Donnie’s Hot Pepper & Mushroom. The hot peppers brought just enough heat without overpowering the pizza, while the mushrooms added that earthy umami flavor that rounded everything out. Every bite was balanced.

What Stood Out

Everything is made from scratch, and you can taste it. The dough, the sauces, the attention to detail…nothing felt rushed or overdone.

Just as important was the hospitality. Chef Rebecca and her team made everyone feel welcome, and that’s something you don’t forget.

One of my favorite parts of these Slice Mob meetups is seeing the community grow. We welcomed a new face, caught up with a familiar one, shared some laughs, and, of course, shared some great pizza. That’s what it’s all about.

Final Thoughts

We only scratched the surface of the menu. Between the pizzas, fresh pastas, seafood, and rotating specials, there’s plenty of reasons to come back.

If you’re a fan of New Haven-style apizza and appreciate restaurants that make everything from scratch while treating you like family, Mangia Mi deserves a spot on your list.

It’s a place I’ll gladly return to, and one I have no problem recommending.
